Freedom Old Home Week

Old Home Week Gallery

Old Home Week Gallery

Friday, July 29- Sunday, August 7, 2011

The Old Home Week Celebration is actually a result of a former governor's proclamation. In the year 1899, the then governor of the state created legislation that would officially support an annual "Old Home Week" in villages and towns throughout NH. This was a direct result of the fact that the state had lost much population due to the westward expansion of civilization in the US. It was much more lucrative for farmers to till the fertile soils of The Plains as opposed to the rocky hillsides of New England. The governor had hoped that if each village had its own week of celebration, inviting former residents back to reconnect with their roots, then perhaps others might think about relocating to NH once again. If nothing else, it would most certainly boost the local economy. Through the years, many towns and villages have abandoned this annual celebration. Some towns no longer celebrate a whole week, but rather, an "Old Home Day". Freedom is one of only five towns throughout the state that still celebrates a full "Old Home Week". Activities are varied and include a myriad of events that bring current and former residents and their families together. There are many summer residents who make this an important part of their seasonal rituals. Activities include a parade through town which passes in front of the B&B, a lobster dinner, an outdoor cocktail party, water and land sports as well as an annual craft sale.

Freedom Ducky Day

Rubber Ducky Race

Rubber Ducky Race Gallery

July 2, 2011

Besides being a lot of fun for all ages, the Rubber Ducky Race helps raise money to support the Old Home Week activities. Again, staying at the B&B offers guests a front row seat. We are right on the cold creek where people wage bets, hoping that their duck will be one of the first over the falls so they can share in some of the prize money. Prior to the race, people gather to play games and can purchase sweatshirts and tee shirts with this year's "Old Home Week" logo. There are also refreshments and tiles sold. A new tile, which commemorates a different historic site in the village, is premiered each year.
